Hailing from the embattled city of Hong Kong, Jay Liu is a film writer, director, and editor. He recently obtained his Master of Fine Arts in Film/TV Production from the USC School of Cinematic Arts. His passion lies in telling indie stories of queer romance and domestic realism, but he is a humble student of all genres and media.
After a competitive process, he was chosen by USC faculty to write and direct his thesis film “Anywhere the Wind Blows,” which has been an official selection at festivals like Los Angeles Asian Pacific and The American Pavilion Emerging Filmmaker Showcase at Cannes. In his spare time, he volunteers as a Festival Director for Hong Kong On Screen, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Hong Kong cinema, and has also worked in video marketing for Hong Kong Disneyland and assisted producer Stephen Gibler at USC.
He is also an adept writer and critic of film and culture. He was chosen twice to be a writer in the official Cannes Classics x USC School of Cinematic Arts partnership, reporting on the Cannes Film Festival. His other bylines include Collider, The Asian Cut, and Cinema Escapist.
